Two films in one: a luminous documentary and a genuine thriller. Not a comfort watch. You don't forget it.

Synopsis

2017. Fresh out of university with no plan and less sense, Sandra flies alone into a Rio favela that answers to one man. Carlão runs these streets, feared by outsiders and adored inside them, and between the crossfire he is building a school so the neighbourhood's kids have somewhere to be that isn't the corner. She's the new volunteer, and the rule is absolute: you do not walk these streets alone.

For weeks she keeps to the main square, learning a place where gunfire is just weather. The days are football with the kids, coxinhas on the daily, açaí at every break, and the odd afternoon escape to Posto 9. On her last day, Carlão walks her through his whole kingdom, top to bottom. She flies home more frightened, and far harder to scare.

What the Critics Say

Documentary or thriller? The film refuses to pick. Correctly.

A Voz do Morro

Name Withheld

½
The scariest setting in the programme, the warmest people in it. Half a star belongs to the açaí alone.
